No Minion (Spell) Mage Deck List & Guide – Forged in the Barrens – April 2021
Our No Minion Spell Mage deck list guide goes through the ins-and-outs of this Mage deck that has been meta-defining in Forged in the Barrens! This guide will teach you how to mulligan, pilot, and substitute cards for this archetype!
Introduction to No Minion Spell Mage
Spell Mage, or No Minion Mage as it is sometimes called, is a Mage deck archetype that was born during the Ashes of Outland expansion in 2020 with the release of Incanter’s Flow, Font of Power, and Apexis Blast, a trio of cards that encouraged Mage players to build decks that consist of spells only.
Spell Mage saw varying levels of success during 2020, and really hit the jackpot with the Standard rotation of 2021: As many decks lost powerful cards, Spell Mage got to keep all of its main power pieces and received Refreshing Spring Water from Forged in the Barrens.
Furthermore, the smaller spell pool and lower power level of a fresh post-rotation meta allowed Deck of Lunacy to shine. Suddenly, Spell Mage could pursue its usual burn plan, or simply change the entire deck to a number of extremely powerful and cheap spells. Spell Mage rapidly became the most popular deck in the game, and games were fun and interactive, but only for the Spell Mage player. Deck of Lunacy was soon nerfed from two mana to four mana, and the madness subsided.
Despite the nerf, Spell Mage is still a viable deck. Even Deck of Lunacy is still a viable card, although it is now a middle-of-the-pack card instead of a dominant force. In this deck guide, I will take a look at Spell Mage both with and without Deck of Lunacy, as both are currently viable alternatives, with the non-Lunacy version looking a little stronger.

General Strategy
At its core, Spell Mage is a slow burn deck. You have a wide variety of direct-damage spells that you can use to reduce your opponent’s health total to zero: Runed Orb, Fireball, Apexis Blast, and Mask of C’Thun can all deal direct damage.
You support this damage-dealing capability with minions from Font of Power and Primordial Studies, as well as from the minions summoned by Apexis Blast. Any damage these minions can deal is an upside, and Spell Damage minions can help you deal even more damage with your direct-damage spells.
Try to use Runed Orb and Apexis Blast early because they give you more resources to play around with, and try to clear the board as well as possible before using Mask of C’Thun.
Discounts from Incanter’s Flow and Primordial Studies can enable you to do many things at once in the late-game, so you may be able to play a Spell Damage minion, clear the board, and use multiple direct-damage spells all at once. A well-timed Imprisoned Phoenix, if you manage to Discover one, can give your damage spells a major boost. If you happen to discover Astromancer Solarian, note that a Solarian Prime in your deck will disable the additional benefits from Font of Power and Apexis Blast.
As your deck consists of spells only, Refreshing Spring Water is essentially free card draw. If you have a discounted Refreshing Spring Water, note that it can only refresh Mana Crystals, it cannot give you extra ones, so try to spend some mana before casting Refreshing Spring Water that costs less than four mana so that you get to fully use the refresh.
Devolving Missiles is your key tool to fight against buffs, and it can make Paladin Librams disappear instead of returning to the hand.
The rest of your deck is card draw and defensive tools. When fighting against the opponent’s minions, try to use Brain Freeze, Combustion, and Flamestrike, because they cannot hit face, but be ready to use some of your direct-damage spells too as needed: the ability to deal damage does you no good if you’re dead.
If you want to play with Deck of Lunacy, all you need to do is include it instead of let’s say Netherwind Portal. If you do it, things are quite different. At four mana, you generally cannot use Deck of Lunacy against aggro decks anymore, because you do not have enough time to make use of your powerful spells unless you have had a phenomenal opener and have defended everything perfectly. Against slower decks, however, it can still provide a lot of pressure.
The deck you get from Deck of Lunacy largely depends on how many copies of Incanter’s Flow you have played during the game: if you have played none, your seven-cost spells turn into Nagrand Slam or Survival of the Fittest, if you have played one, they will all become Libram of Hope, and if you have played two, they can become a variety of eight-cost spells, many of which are useless. In short, don’t play two copies of Incanter’s Flow before Deck of Lunacy. Of course, the order is important – you can (and should) play any remaining copies of Incanter’s Flow after you have played Deck of Lunacy!
Deck of Lunacy usually turns your deck into a more board-based one, where you destroy everything your opponent has on the board and smack them in the face with minions. This is especially strong against decks that can heal a lot but can also be weaker against decks that are good at clearing the board, but weaker against direct damage.
Vs Aggro Decks
As Spell Mage, your worst nightmare is Hunter. Hunter is fast at dealing damage, and any small minions you have on the board turn into liabilities because of Trampling Rhino and Piercing Shot. You need to able to handle their early board quickly with Brain Freeze, Runed Orb, and Combustion, and hopefully start turning the tide with Apexis Blast followed by Ring Toss for defensive Secrets, but the matchup is really difficult no matter what.
The same general approach works against other aggro decks too: defend, get defensive Secrets, and start blasting their face to win.
Vs Control Decks
Against control decks, you are the beatdown. You are the one who has the initiative and who applies pressure, attempting to make the control deck crumble.
Get minions on the board as soon as possible and try to deal damage with them whenever you can. Use Runed Orb and Apexis Blast early to get additional resources from them. Try to set up big damage turns with Spell Damage minions, Fireballs, and Mask of C’Thun.
If you are using Deck of Lunacy, try to use it as soon as possible and use minion pressure to run the control deck out of resources.
No Minion Spell Mage Card Substitutions
Spell Mage is a fairly affordable deck: You can use Deck of Lunacy if you like, but it is by no means mandatory. Likewise, some decks use C’thun, the Shattered or Evocation, but they are not mandatory either (statistics show mixed results of those two, but they certainly help in some matchups).

While Mage decks have flirted with the idea of not including many spells, this archetype instead goes the opposite direction and gets rid of minions! I really like the idea of this because it really makes sense flavor wise with the class. A Mage should be casting spells, and there’s few decks in the game that would have you casting more then this one! Ashes of Outland gave the class enough new spells to work with that not only fit the theme, but are better when you don’t include minions in your deck.

No Minion Mage Tips & Play Strategy
This deck might be a bit on the slow side, but once we get it going it has the potential to be problematic due to the powerful spells and the randomness of what we’ll be producing with those cards. We’ll also be able to burn our opponent down from higher life totals due to some cost reduction that’s in the deck.
We’ve got two cards in this deck that benefit from the fact that we don’t have any minions in it. Font of Power is a powerful tool to fill up our hand in either the early or late game. Apexis Blast is another of these cards. It’s very versatile, because not only can you remove a minion with it, you could also go to the face! Best case scenario is we remove a minion and then get a powerful one of our own. It’s a card that can swing games depending on the situation.
Incanter’s Flow is an amazing early game card, but it’s something that will be pretty dead in the later stages of the match. However, it will really help us gain tempo throughout the match, so it’s worth including in the deck.
Evocation while costing 1-mana is a late game card. You don’t get mana reduction on these spells, so this is so much better to play when you have the mana to cast the majority of the spells you get in your hand. This will likely be used for potential lethal by attempting to get that one or two additional damage spells you need to finish the job.

Did this a while ago and forgot to update here. Cut 1x Font of Power and 2x Hot Streak. Added 1x Ice Barrier and 2x Primordial Studies. Ice Barrier is excellent vs agressive strategies and Primordial Studies is superior to Font of Power in this deck as the random mage minions just clog up your hand. This deck is godlike if you can get off 1-2 Incanter’s Flow early. Hit Legend with this version of the deck a few days ago.

Swapped one Devolving Missiles with one Font of Power. There are a lot of no minion quests deck (warlock and mage), this card saves my life every time I draw it.

I play 5 games with this deck, and result is 1-4.

There is always something missing, draw or frost spells.

Has 10 fire spells, 4 frost, and 11 arcane.
The fire spells can generate more fire spells (First Flame, Ignite). Arcane are all important shouldn’t be touched imo, so really need to remove a couple of fire spells.

Good advice, but I removed Hot Streak all toghether. It’s very situational and a second cone of cold seems to make the questline move on quicker.

DECK IS PURE GARBAGE
Personally, I dropped the two Apexis Blasts, and added the 2nd Ice Barrier, and Evocation. Having Evocation’s potential reach near the end of a game is excellent.

Evocation is okay, but you rarely get much value out of it compared to double incanter’s flow on your deck. You’d mainly use it to fish for quest completion, and you’re playing full cost spells to do it, which isn’t the meta. A big reason why this deck is so broken is because of cheap spells, and if you’re rolling 5+ mana spells from an evoc its almost never worth it.
This deck is unbelievable. 90% WR for 10 games. Maybe it can be added a few frost spells but this is not be must.
Please explain the maths behind this
Hear me out: it’s an arcane spell, can get 0 cost frost and fire spells, fire spell of which can allow you to play another fire spell.
It goes really well with the quest, if you get lucky. It’s worth a look.
Also just a note, Apexis is no longer arcane tagged.
the loss of frostbolt from the frost pool really hurts this deck. Have been able to go 3 wins 4 losses with it so far, but either you hit the frost spells quickly, or go down swinging.
despite the tons of damage you lose from pulling an apexis, I think possibly pulling one for a cone of cold and then dropping one of the hot streaks for either a second cone of cold, flurry, or ice barrier, may make up for the current high highs and low lows of the frost draw in this deck.
have not experimented with it yet.
update: my meta shifted big time. Lots of no minion decks or decks running very few minions.

i have enjoyed both versions, the one posted here is doing much better against minions that stick on the board.
I have only found myself wishing I kept devolving in this version once or twice in the last 15 games.

C’Thun No Minion Mage
Small update guys. The deck performs very well from Bronze to Diamond 5. From Diamond 5 it´s very hard to climb contantly. But it´s more of a fun then try-hard deck.
The cards in the deck performs all very well. T he only exchange that makes sense is Devolving Missiles for Mask of C’Thun. the rest should be fine.

Honestly I built a similar list prior to viewing this that had Deck of Lunacy instead of Cthun and it works fine. It is extremely rare to ever get Cthun off in this high aggro meta, but where adding it in does help is giving you more removal and decent cards to convert into higher cost spells with deck of lunacy, which is good against the seldom occasion that you run into a priest because you’ll have 3 more cards in your deck to hopefully stall the fatigue match just those couple extra turns longer.
You can make the argument to switch out fireball for polymorph, but if you draw a bunch of damage spells that can go face, this deck actually does a decent job as an aggro deck itself.
If I were to replace anything in the list, it’d actually be the ray of frosts because the deck has so much removal that freezing stuff doesn’t matter much in the long term. Either you have the removal or you don’t, and delaying 2-3 damage from these wide boards that these aggro DH, hunter, and shaman decks are putting out won’t do much. If it were me, throw in a Deck of Lunacy and a Polymorph and see how it goes. I made it to P3 with that loadout with a slightly higher than 50% wr, and could have probably gone higher, so the deck performs well for sure.
