Error Code 55
I have a brand new Asus Maximus X Formula Mobo with a brand new Intel i7-8700k CPU and a brand new Corsair Ram KIT CMK16GX4M2B3000C15 (2x8GB DIMMs 3000MHZ CL15)
I have been getting a blank screen and Q-code 55 on every boot of my computer, The Q-LED Error always says «CC» and a few seconds later it says»55″.
I tried to reseat, test every stick of RAM in single mode.. but the mobo still says «55»
«CC» means clear cmos. So clear CMOS and try again. Maybe take out the Battery of the board for a little while. I know that clear cmos button havnt reliably worked on some bios versions for the formula, since i got the same board.
Clear Cmos button
Mem OK button
Flashing the bios
If it’s still not posting, it could be the cpu cooler is too tight or you may have some bent cpu socket pins. You could check the cpu socket with a magnifying glass and remount the cpu cooler making sure it’s not too tight.
You need to exchange your RAM for an other. I had the same problem on Z270 Maximus IX Code, it is just not supported by the MB, even it is in the QVL.
Error Code 55 SOLVED (For me)
The error could be caused by an air or liquid cooler. If you have recently place a new bracket for the cooler or decided to tighten the old bracket, you might have bent the motherboard a little and cause the RAM lanes not to sync with the mobo. It is possible and that’s what happened to me. After taking out the CPU and playing musical chairs with the DIMM slots, the issue was solved by giving the bracket some slack and not mounting the aio so the hoses pull on the unit itself. (I have a liquid cooler).
Hopefully this helps someone.

I had this issue with a brand new setup and it was bent pins in the socket, Even though you may think you inserted the CPU carefully check it again carefully with a mag glass, It’s so easy to move one of these little pins out of place, I wish they would go back to solid pins on CPUs rather than these flimsy crappy one’s on current sockets.

I would like to kindly ask you for a help with my new PC.
I carefully assembled my PC, which booted without problems and POST was successful. In BIOS I turned on Virtualization and VT-D, then applied it, MB got restarted.
Then I went again into BIOS and wanted to set up the XMP profile for the RAM. The change was not saved yet, I was looking for some more options in BIOS: BOOT order, CSM, enabled UEFI only, etc., and the BIOS got frozen while I was making the setup. So I restarted it and the computer did not want to load anymore, neither POST.
B1 means Runtime Set virtual MAP address
55 means Memory not installed
CC is not listed in the manual.
For B1 and 55 the yellow RAM error LED was active, for CC the red CPU error LED was active on the MB.
So, I took out the RAMs and inserted just one. After thins system POST OK. But when I inserted also the second RAM, again the same problems.
When I ise 2 or more pieces of RAM, it does not matter if Dual Channel or just for example in A1 and B2, the MB doest not POST or BOOT, just yellow or red error led with the mentioned codes.
When I use only one piece of RAM, it does not matter which ram slot on the MB (A1 or B1 or A2 or B2), system is OK, post is OK, system can BOOT.
I tried to increase the RAM voltage to 1,35 as it is listed with these V in the QVL, but did not help. I flashed the newest bios 0701, but same result.
RAMs seems to be Ok, I tested each in the same MB slot, I mean one by one.
Well, this is not my first PC assembling, I am an IT employee for 7 years, I already assembled more hundred PCs. But this is my first time, so I have a problem.
Please, what can cause these problems? The ram controller in the CPU or MB?

On the edge of my seat here, looking for any reason to not RMA and go through the horribly inconvenient process of it. So i’ve Built a new Skylake build, with the important bits as follows;
CPU: Intel Skylake 6700k
Mobo: Asus Maximus VIII Hero
RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 8 GB (2 x 4 GB) DDR4 2400 Mhz CL14 XMP (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B. ilpage_o02_s01)
CPU cooler: Corsair h80i
Initially I had a bunch of problems actually getting windows 10 installed, blue screens and random restarts, but seem to have fixed this. I had my ram in the correct slots, 1 and 3. However, yesterday my computer froze up and on restart gave me an error code 55, which after some research i found to be no memory installed. After a bit of investigation i have come to the conclusion that my ram (of which both sticks work) only work if installed into the right 2 slots, 3 and 4 (which i assume isn’t doing me any favours as they’ron seperate chanels).
I’ve flashed the BIOS up to the latest, 1001.
I’ve checked that my cpu cooler isn’t on too tight, loosening up a little but to no avail.
Checked i have no bent pins on the cpu/motherboard. This was one of the first things I’ve tried.
I’m running out of ideas now. Maybe you guys could throw some ideas at me? Otherwise i’m looking at the painful RMA experience again : (
Hi Kestami and Welcome to ROG
Don’t wright off the MB just yet. As you say: (looking for any reason to not RMA and go through the horribly inconvenient process of it).
Did you test your Dimms are working OK?
If not, run Memtest86+ from a USB. That will eliminate that possibility.
Go into Bios and set priority to boot from USB, test for 8GB.
Dimms should be tested in slots A2 and B2 as per manual section:1.2.4
Also make sure the Dimms are seated correctly, especially offside to the clip.

Memory: G.Skill TridentZ F4-3200C14D-16GTZR SSD: Samsung 500GB 960 EVO M.2
Cheers for the reply. I’ll do the memtest very shortly, as we know there can be underlying issues (when using the ram in the right 2 slots i’m experiencing no issues at least user wise, but memtest might say otherwise).
One weird thing is that if i put my RAM in the proper slots, a2 and b2, i get the error 55. However, if i press the memOK button and let it run through it’s configuration, i can get into bios and it says «mem tested OK!», However as soon as i reboot from that it goes back to error 55! Strange, eh.
Currently the only config i can get to boot (and then run flawlessly) is b1 and b2 :s anything in the A slots just kills it
So after RMA’ing, i’ve put my new motherboard in and after running memOK, i’ve got everything working. However, one strange thing i’ve noticed is when it first hit the BIOS it had the RAM down as 1600mhz, which i thought was lower than the standard base for ddr4. After about 6 hours usage i’ve only had one freeze which was similar to when the old motherboard conked out on it’s a1 and b2 slots..but it booted back up fine. I’m starting to think I may have a RAM problem too, anyone experienced like this before? I’m going to run memtest again, so i’ll post back after i’ve done that. Any help would be appreciated though, worried we’re going to end up at the same place!
Hi Kestami
Glad to see you up and running.

Can you try loosening a little the screws for your CPU block for me? See if that helps.
It’s possible your cpu waterblock is too tight causing uneven pressure on the cpu and could be causing code 55. If it’s not booting with one stick this could be the problem or you may have some bent cpu socket pins.
If loosening your waterblock a touch doesn’t help, remove your waterblock and cpu and inspect the cpu socket for any bent or misaligned pins. Use a magnifying glass in good light, look close and carefully.
OK I can check. I used the CPU installation tool to make sure there was no pin mistakes. I’ll loosen it now.
I loosened it without any change. Again, if I take out all the memory, the system beeps as expected. I have 16GB (4x4GB) version of RipJaw V’s landing tomorrow. Before I remove the CPU and inspect pins, I’m going to try that first. I’m scared of making a mistake or making things worse. Plus I don’t have much of my Arctic Silver left. If the 16GB kit does not work, I’ll dig deeper into the CPU inspection.
Ok sounds good but if one stick is not booting at default settings now I doubt you will have any luck with new ram tomorrow.
You don’t need much arctic silver thermal compound. A dab about the size of a small pea is all you need. There are 2 ways to apply the thermal compound.
Be sure to clean your cpu and waterblock thoroughly before applying new thermal compound.
Give us an update tomorrow after trying your new ram and inspecting the cpu socket if need be. Don’t be scared, be cautious. Take your time and be gentle uninstalling/installing your cpu.
I tried the 16GB kit, no love. I then started inserting DIMMs in any slot to see if it would post. Interestingly enough, it would post with DIMMs inserted into DIMM_B1 or DIMM_B2, which is against the recommended memory configurations. At this point, I removed the CPU cooler (which was on just «snug» not «OMFGsquished!») and CPU and inspected the MB Pins. Everything looked fine. So bit the bullet and swapped it for the second Hero board I had here for a second system, and it worked fine.
A back up is always nice to have to fall back on, looks it’s rma time.
Ozy if you haven’t RMA’d yet I may have a possible solution to try, as you probably have exhausted all solutions at this point.
So I had a very similar situation as you did, my ram was the gskill ripjaws v 3000 variant, and it looks like you have the cooler master cpu cooler (nepton?). If so I have the nepton in my current build as well.
I was getting the code 55 no matter what I tried, I thought it may have been a bad motherboard/ram scenario. I stumbled upon some recommendation online. What you should check are the four metal standoffs that secure the cooler bracket to the back of the motherboard. Inspect the metal standoffs and notice how on one side is bare metal, and on the other is some type of black coating material on the other side. What you want to do is make the black coated side is face down on the motherboard (im guessing this is what tells the motherboard you have a secure connection when they are tightened down).
In my build, 3 out of the 4 standoffs were incorrectly placed. Once I flipped them all the right way and replaced the cooler, the PC booted up! The funny thing is, cooler master does not mention this in their instructions. Hope this may help.

Natel152 Thank you so much. I had Q Code 55 with the following setup and found that I had indeed over-tightened my CPU cooler. As soon as I reinstalled with much less torque, everything ran perfect.

Maximus V Formula Code 55
Hi, i just bought an asus maximus V formula for my new build everything looks great but i have a problem with an error code 55 everytime i tried to boot my pc with 4 rams modules.
I tried with 1 module and the mobo post without problems, i did it with every memory and it works with all modules when i tried with a single channel. I would like to know if theres a problem with my mobo since i just got it from store 2 days ago.
I did a memtest in another pc and the ram works without problems.
If someone knows how to fix this lame code 55 please help me!
My build is :
CPU Intel Core i7 2700k
Memory: Corsair Vengeance 16 Gb (4×4) Dual Channel CML16GX3M4A1600c9B.
Graphic Card: EVGA GTX 670 Sc.
PSU: Corsair AX 1200
If each slot works on its own, then try setting XMP in UEFI. If that does not help, use USB BIOS flash to update to the latest UEFI build and then try again.
In addition to what Raja has suggested could you please try this.
Check on your CPU cooler, it might just be a little to tight on one corner.
noddux, what are your VDIMM and VCCIO? They may be low for 4 modules.
Questions
Hi guys, thanks for all your help.
I did check the cpu cooler for any issues but everything is ok.
Im going to upgrade the bios like you recommend me (hope it works )because i tried X.M.P. but still the same code 55 when i put all modules.
About VDIMM and VCCIO i dunno how to set up these values as you can see im new to asus, so it would be good if someone tell me how to do that also what are the recommended values for 4 memories.
New Bios
What is the voltage your memories are rated? And what voltage are your running your memories? Same questions about the memory timings.
Memory voltage is rated at 1.5 v. frecuency at 1600 mhz.
Hmm other data from memory 9-9-9-24 dunno whats that :S
DRAM Timing Control Saids:
Maximus Tweak = Auto
Primary Timings:
DRAM CAS# CHB 9 = 9
DRAM RAS# to CAS# Delay CHB 9=9
DRAM RAS# PRE Time CHB 9 = 9
DRAM RAS# ACT Time CHB 24 = 24
Latency Boundary = Auto
Secondary and Third Timings = Auto Everything.
It looks like i have problems when the motherboard find more than 1 module installed..
OK, so the 1.5V is the memory voltage, the 9-9-9-24 are the memory timings.
In the GPU DIMM POST says only that the base frequency of the RAM is 1333MHz, but your is running at 1600MHz (as it should).
Here is what I would suggest you:
Set the Ai Tweaker at «Manual» instead of «XMP» as it is now.
Double check the Memory Frequency to be at «DDR3-1600MHz»
Go lower and set the VDIMM (memory voltage) to «1.5V» (it’s below the CPU voltage or Vcore)
The go to memory timings and manually introduce those numbers from your modules 9-9-9-24, let everything else on «Auto»
Hit F10 and Enter, and see if it gives you the same error code (don’t worry at this point, it should)
If it gives you the same error 55, go back to BIOS and start increasing the memory voltage (VDIMM) by one notch and try booting. I believe, you should be fine before or when you hit 1.65V.
Let us know, how it goes.
