SCR network map for V1.4-V1.5

The Stepford County Railway, more commonly referred to as SCR, is a heavy rail system that serves as the primary rail network for Stepford County, spanning most of the county and other regions. The first section of the SCR opened on 25 November 2017, and the network has grown rapidly since then to link various districts and areas.

The SCR network is owned by Network Rail and Transport For Stepford, which manages most stations on the network as of Version 1.7. keeps services flowing smoothly, and assists staff members in train traffic control.

As of October 2020, the SCR network has 61 stations in full operation, spread across four lines. There are 51 routes in which trains run on, with more routes being put into service in the near future.

Background

For more information about the history of SCR, see Timeline of Events. For information about list of updates to the game, see Changelog. The old map is on the right.

Operations

The main part of the railway is driving. It would however not be complete without Dispatchers, Guards and Signallers controlling the network. Everyone in SCR starts as a Trainee Driver after joining the group, and ranks up the roles to be able to dispatch, guard and signal by going through training sessions and application processes. Supervisors+ supervise their corresponding Members to ensure that they are working in a proper manner.

Train Identification

Before The Big Update, the railway solely relied on the numbering of the trains to identify them (e.g. 357001, 707028), until SCR implemented the Headcode system. This new identification system allows dispatchers, guards and signallers to communicate information regarding trains more efficiently, and also solve problems and delays.

Safety Measures

In order to avoid collisions between trains, SCR operates with over 800 fully functional 4-aspect signals (more than 315 signals added after the Llyn extension). The signals can be controlled by Signallers. A great majority of these signals are also fitted with another aspect that simultaneously lights up when the signal is at amber. This aspect shows a white «45,» which advises drivers to drive at 45 miles per hour, which is the optimal speed to be at for a train to brake for a potential danger aspect. However, in order to drive effectively, drivers need a system to notify them of the next signal’s state. The Automatic Warning System (AWS) takes care of this issue. When the AWS recognizes a non-Proceed signal ahead, a yellow circle with an exclamation mark appears on the train driver’s HUD, alongside with a loud beep sound. This tells the driver to slow down and prepare for a stop. The driver must click it or press Q on their keyboard to accept the warning within six seconds. When the driver fails to acknowledge the warning or stop before passing a signal at Danger/red, the Train Protection and Warning System (TPWS) triggers an emergency brake for the train to forcefully stop the train.

In the Version 1.1 update, a new speed limit indicator was installed on the driver’s HUD, which relays the speed limit to the driver of the train on the section of track they are driving on.

About 2 months later, a new signal indicator was installed on the driver’s HUD, which tells the driver what the next signal will be.

In February 2020, with the release of Version 1.4.1, new shunt signals were introduced at Faymere Green TMD. 2 white lights mean proceed and 2 red mean stop.

Although SCR uses an advanced signalling system, collisions still occur, mostly at the City Hospital Triangle, near the station of City Hospital. When a collision happens, the two trains involved merge together.

Criticism

Stepford County Railway, like most other ROBLOX games, is met with a considerable amount of criticism, including:

Signalling Desks

The signalling desks are the equipment which signallers use to control train traffic around the the Stepford County Railway network in a Rail Operations Centre or Signal Box. Each signalling desk covers a certain part of the network, known as a signal zone. Signallers can access train information, monitor actual traffic condition on the line using cameras, and control the railway signals within the signal zone on the screens and GUIs of the signalling desk.

Contents

History

Signalling desks have been present since almost the start of SCR. Before Version 1.0, each signaller had all the buttons to change the signals in front of them with a camera for each signal available. However, as the buttons were physical ones, and the signalling system was less advanced at that time, it was hard to signal at that time.

This changed with the release of Version 1.0 and signalling desks were changed to have a line diagram in the style of an IECC where each individual signal’s status could be checked and if the signal was «manual», the signal aspect could be changed. Signal desks were divided into small areas, with physical buttons being replaced with GUIs, making signalling more easier and efficient.

The next major update came with V1.7, where the desks were reallocated so that the control areas were larger. The style remained like an IECC however, the UI to control and manage trains made the workflow more organised for signallers.

Trainings

Trainings are one of the requirements to get to a higher Member and Supervisor rank in SCR. To join a training, players first need to gain experience to satisfy the training requirements for the rank (or pass the Applications beforehand for Signallers and Supervisors).

Once such prerequisites are fulfilled, they will have to pass the theory training, followed by practical assessments in order to learn the respective skills and knowledge needed for the tasks performed by their upcoming rank before they are officially promoted to it.

Times for all trainings can be found here. Do note that you will not be able to join any trainings if your in-game chat function is disabled.

Qualified Driver/Dispatcher/Guard training

Training components

For QD, DS and GD trainings, they comprise of 3 stages, which can be seen below:

Theory training

Once you reached the following training requirements for each rank:

You will then be eligible for the theory training of the respective rank.

For the theory training, you will have to read the in-game training guide for the rank you are training for. They can be accessed via the «Training» tab in the main menu, and they will cover the rules, information, skills and knowledge required about your next rank.

After you have fully understand the points covered in the training guide, you will have to complete a theory quiz. The theory quiz will cover both existing knowledge of your current rank, plus what you have learnt from the training guide. The quiz includes about 10 multiple choice questions to ensure that you are able to retain the knowledge you read from the training guide. If you pass the theory test, you will be eligible to participate in the practical training of your upcoming rank.

Practical training

Training queue system

A way to reserve your place on training sessions (for Qualified Driver, Dispatcher and Guard roles) has been implemented in-game since V1.5.1. The way the player can do it has changed through time, and the most current one is based on a virtual queue. All the players that have reached Stage 3 of training can set their training time preferences. The preference is to be set on 3-hour slots during the day that fit the player availability. After the training preference has been set by the player, they are placed on a virtual queue waiting for the scheduling of training sessions by the training team.

When a new session is scheduled, the players in the queue are assigned to the training session according to their position on the queue and their training preferences. A player can only be assigned to a session when the session fits entirely inside their training preferences.

The use of training queue system is not compulsory in order to join a practical session. You may attend training sessions as a walk-in without reservation. However, your chance of obtaining a slot will be lower as players who are in queue will be guaranteed a spot, and walk-ins may only join if there are still places left in a training after the joining time for reserved players.

Attending a practical training session

Practical training sessions for QD/DS/GD are held in individual servers specifically used for trainings.

The training server will be opened 10 minutes before the starting time of a session for assigned players to join. If they do it in this period, their place on the session is guaranteed (as there are always more places in the session than assigned trainees). At the starting time of the session, all the players can join (even players with an active cooldown from the scheduling system, see below for details).

To join a practical training session, enter any public server, and click «Training» on the main menu. If you are on time, it should say «You can join now». Then, click «Join session». If you have assigned a position in the training, or if there are still positions opened for joining, you will be teleported to the training server.

After loading in, stay in the passenger team, spawn and proceed to the assembly location as soon as possible.

The server closes some minutes after the training starting time and the briefing starts for the session. A Q&A will also be available for you to raise questions if needed. After that practical assessments will be taking place.

Practical assessments

Practical assessments are one of the most important element in trainings. You will be asked to complete and be evaluated on tasks related to the rank you are training for, in order to make sure you have fully absorbed all the stuff you learnt during theory training, and you can apply them in actual railway operations accurately.

The tasks for practical assessments for each rank are listed below:

If you did not commit any mistakes and passed the assessment, you will be promoted to the respective ranks.

After the training, you may obtain feedback about your training performance. Currently, only those who are in the SCR Discord server may obtain it, by reacting to the SCR Trainer Bot announcement in the «training» channel of the SCR Discord. In the future, these messages would also be available in-game for non-Discord members, according to the roadmap.

Training cooldown

If you did not attend or failed a training session assigned to you via the training queue system, you will be given a training scheduling cooldown, and you may not reserve for another assigned place in training sessions for the next few days. However, you may still join another training session during the cooldown as a walk-in if there are still places left in a training after the joining time for reserved players. The cooldown does not apply to failing a training session that you joined without reservation.

In addition, if you failed a theory quiz, you will receive a week of cooldown before you may attempt it again.

Signaller training

If you passed the application for Signaller, you will now take part in the Trainee Signaller program, in which you will have 3 sections to pass in the following order.

Supervisor training

If you passed the application for a Supervisor rank, you will be required to take part in the training programme of the respective supervisor rank hosted by your department manager, before you can carry out your jobs as a Supervisor officially.

The training programme includes theory and practical sessions, and will cover the major tasks that Supervisors are responsible for, including hosting and co-hosting training sessions, monitoring junior rank members, providing support to SCR Assistance ticket requests, performing moderation in-game and in Discord etc. Very few details about the training programme are known by the public, and some variations may exist in the training scheme of each Supervisor rank depending on arrangements of the department.

Training System 2.0

A overview of the new training system (training 2.0)

On May 15, 2020, BanTech revealed the training system 2.0 proposal. The Training System 2.0 for all Members except Signallers were implemented on January 1, 2021 when V1.7.1 was released.

The Training System 2.0 for signallers is still under development, and is planned to be released within 2021 according to in-game information.

However, the Training 2.0 has no change to the requirement of being able to chat in-game to do the trainings. Therefore, the Training tab is hidden from anyone who has disabled chat to avoid wasting allocation spaces and to avoid them communicating via the application, as that would essentially be violating their privacy settings.

For Qualified Drivers/Dispatchers/Guards

For Signallers

Note: Training 2.0 for Signallers has not been implemented yet, and is probably subjected to delay.

The purpose of the change to Signallers is made so that having a Discord account is no longer a requirement for Signallers, hence the Signaller rank will then be allowed for players under 13 years old as Discord does not allow people who are under 13 years of age to open an account according to its Terms of Service.

Training guide

Training guides of the above ranks are available for all players (except Signaller, which is only for Signaller+) to read in-game at any time, in order help players if they forgot the exact rules and procedures of different ranks and also to let players prepare for the training of their next rank.

Avoiding demotion

History

The old signalling room used to be in Coxly and it only had physical buttons to change the signal and cameras to view the trains passing by, which made it hard to signal at that time. This area has been taken out of use as part of The Big Update, and was replaced by the Benton ROC. However, the area was still accessible to Signallers until it caught the attention of the developers and it was locked off completely. The area was completely demolished when Coxly Station was rebuilt in V1.6.

The signalling system had a complete rewrite in the Big Update.

In Version 1.1, the Rail Operations Centre was relocated from Benton to Stepford East.

In V1.4.4, the Stepford East Rail Operations Centre was replaced by the Stepford Rail Operations Centre at Stepford Central, with the Stepford Central refresh/renovation done by yrrebRBLX, one of the Product Developers.

In V1.7, the signalling system received another complete overhaul, which include a new interface, better train monitoring, camera views and mobile/gamepad compatibility, plus reducing the number of signalling zones in the network from 12 to 6.

After the revamp, instead of locating all desks in the Stepford ROC as in the past, 3 of the desks were relocated to the new signalling boxes located at Beaulieu Park, Benton and Starryloch. Among them, the Starryloch Signal Box was short-lived, which has been replaced by the new ROC at Llyn-by-the-Sea in V1.7.2.
